Subject Matter Experts are naturally wired to become exceptional trainers or education contributors. How can we spot and harness this potential to enrich learning programs?

Your best trainer might already be on payroll.

In many B2B SaaS teams, the strongest training potential isn’t sitting inside L&D—it’s in your implementation engineer, your product specialist or your professional services lead.

Subject Matter Experts are naturally wired to become exceptional trainers and/or content contributors. When companies miss this, they lose the opportunity to turn real-world implementation knowledge into scalable, use case-driven education.

How can you spot your potential training stars? How do you support them to create more educational value?

What makes a good SME a likely great trainer?

Beyond titles, look for behaviors:

  • They tell stories instead of listing features.

  • They explain architecture using real client scenarios.

  • They can adjust depth to audience: support managers hear “process impact”; technical admins hear “configuration clarity”; executives hear “time, cost, and risk”.

  • They translate technical KPIs into bottom-line metrics: latency becomes revenue exposure; error rates become ticket load, deployment complexity becomes implementation cost.

  • Most importantly, they enjoy enabling others. They don’t just solve problems — they want others to solve them too.

What does a good SME need to become a great trainer?

To avoid excessive iteration, SMEs need:

  • A defined content target: a course, a webinar series, a lab track — something concrete to build toward.

  • Instructional guidance from process: development runbook, lesson / scripting templates, style guides, resource collections.

  • Instructional guidance from example: make sure they review and critique the best (and worst) output from your training materials collection.

  • To regularly partner with your existing trainers or instructional roles.

  • Access to compatible authoring tools, and the protected bandwidth to use them.

Keep in mind that great SMEs don’t need to become full-time educators; they can be integrated into a structured training content lifecycle to amplify and enrich its value.
